Works brilliantly as a memoir, hilarious anecdotes for dog lovers, insightful and honest information for prospective dog owners, hope and inspiration for those despairing of their dog ever being perfect or even normal and why just being who they are is perfect.
A book you'll want to read again as soon as you've read it.

John Grogan brought to life the idea of inexperienced pet owners walking blindly into owning a dog. We all like to play and cuddle with a cute little puppy, but when the puppy gets to be bigger these same antics aren't so cute anymore. This is when the real time and effort needs to be brought on for the owner and pet. Like a child, without our guidance they will never be "the perfect dog".
I trully enjoyed reading the story and later watching the movie version of the book. I think a lot of people put themselves into the mind set that if they can raise a dog and not kill it (like so many of us do with our house plants) then our future children have a chance. The book has a great storyline and one can really empathize with the characters. The life span of a dog is anywhere from 8-18 years and they really become a very important part of our lives. Thanks John for sharing one families story with us.
This book is written for adults, but can easily be shared with children as young as eleven or twelve. My daughter plans to read it next and I expect to have a lot of talks with her about it as she gets through the various chapters. That is one great thing about a good book, it helps to bring out conversation and can help reinforce the bond between people with similar interests.

Wonderful true story about a family and a naughty Lab named Marley. This dog was kicked out of obedience school, careened through screen doors, ate everything that he could fit in his mouth, but managed to comfort his people at a difficult time in their marriage. The story made me laugh until tears rolled down my cheeks.

As the proud owner of a black lab I must confess I started this book with a soft spot for not only labs but dogs in general. It started as a nighttime storybook for my two younger daughters as I read them a chapter in each sitting averaging a couple of chapters a week. The only time it got a little dicey was during the initial loss of the baby and the description of the activities that occurred surrounding that specific scenario. I think it was a touching part of the book and definitely should have been included but was a little too much for my seven year old to hear.
For the few of you who don't know the book/movie storyline the premise is a writer finding himself at the beginning of his relationship which turns into a marriage and blossoms into a lifelong connection. Marley (the central hub of the story) becomes the couple's rambunctious pet towards the beginning of their journey and keeps the storyline spicy with his constant terrorizing of all inanimate objects within reach of his constantly chewing mouth. Nothing is too sacred not to be digested by the huge garbage disposal that can seemingly inhale plastic, metal and fabric just as easily as he can kibbles and bits.
While Marley remains the focus the real story is of a man finding himself in his family which blossoms throughout the book ending with three children (two boys and one girl) and the formation of a loving bond between two people as they grow together in an ever changing environment dealing with house jumping and moving of jobs as careers/family duties fluctuate. The humanistic tone is set from the beginning as the contradictory friend of the main character starts achieving success in his bachelor fashion leaving his friend behind in his marital turmoil dealing with typical family issues.
In the end it is formalized that the real winner is Grogan as he finds not only his best friend is his dog but his wife and kids are the only thing that truly matters in his winding road of life. As with all dogs Marley finds his way through to old age and dies as the book is wrapping up keeping true to the fact that dogs lives are shorter than our own and they only have the ability to share a portion of our journey. Hopefully they enhance the scene that they are included in as we should reciprocate the feeling giving our dogs the happiness they so rightly deserve. Dogs are by so much more than definition our best friends.
A dog's love is unconditional and inspiring. The happiness to see you as you walk through the door is something every dog owner can count on no matter what day it is or what that day has brought. The anxiety of being separated from us and not knowing why is the instigation that in most cases causes the remote to go missing, or the blinds to be torn down or as in most cases the little pile of deification to be left as a present for us to see as we walk through the front door.
In the beginning and throughout the book Marley is defined as the world's worst dog and it is easy to see how that label could be justly deserved. Marley tears through garages, eats jeweler, inhales couches and chairs, destroys phones, speakers etc. etc. It is only at the end where the realization comes of personal belongings being insignificant in life. The trinkets we cherish can be no comparison to the love that our family (including our dogs) can bring to us if we only allow ourselves to open up to the possibilities of what and how to prioritize.
The book is a great read. Simplistic in nature and heartfelt but a book that reminds you of the importance of love and family from a unique perspective. I enjoyed it and while the movie leaned towards commercialism I felt it did capture the essence of what the book was portraying.
I would recommend anyone who owns a dog should read the book and if you are into movies at all take a chance and rent the DVD with a bowl of popcorn and a couple of tissues for the soft of heart. I admittedly shed a small tear towards the end as my lab lay next to my bed and Mr. Bean lay in my lap snuggling while I watched Marley succumb to old age that we will all eventually face. With all of the books and movies out there you could definitely do worse than this.
