Product Description

“We're going to raise traders just like they raise turtles in Singapore.”

So trading guru Richard Dennis reportedly said to his long-time friend William Eckhardt nearly 25 years ago. What started as a bet about whether great traders were born or made became a legendary trading experiment that, until now, has never been told in its entirety.

Way of the Turtle reveals, for the first time, the reasons for the success of the secretive trading system used by the group known as the “Turtles.” Top-earning Turtle Curtis Faith lays bare the entire experiment, explaining how it was possible for Dennis and Eckhardt to recruit 23 ordinary people from all walks of life and train them to be extraordinary traders in just two weeks.

Only nineteen years old at the time-the youngest Turtle by far-Faith traded the largest account, making more than $30 million in just over four years. He takes you behind the scenes of the Turtle selection process and behind closed doors where the Turtles learned the lucrative trading strategies that enabled them to earn an average return of over 80 percent per year and profits of more than $100 million. You'll discover

  • How the Turtles made money-the principles that guided their trading and the step-by-step methods they followed
  • Why, even though they used the same approach, some Turtles were more successful than others
  • How to look beyond the rules as the Turtles implemented them to find core strategies that work for any tradable market
  • How to apply the Turtle Way to your own trades-and in your own life
  • Ways to diversify your trading and limit your exposure to risk

Offering his unique perspective on the experience, Faith explains why the Turtle Way works in modern markets, and shares hard-earned wisdom on taking risks, choosing your own path, and learning from your mistakes.

4 out of 5 stars Way of the Turtle   July 9, 2010

An excellent background of the stock/commodity traders who were trained as one of the legendary Turtle trader group in the 1980's. The book takes into consideratin that this method is not the best for everyone, but if practiced correctly with the necessary emotional stability required, one can become very wealthy.

This book is about what HAPPENED! Curtis does go into details (maybe some) of the methods they used, BUT be WARNED the methods are by no means still (necessarily) applicable. Needless to say, as Curtis say in the book, even if they were most probably you do not have the necessary resource to follow though the program. Having partially read an interview of Richard Dennis by Art Collins in 2004 I'd bet the methods are no longer that MUCH applicable.
The book is great as a look on what happened and even some of the "tips" in trading that Curtis gives; but there's no holy grail here.

2 out of 5 stars There are better and more focussed trading books out there   April 4, 2010

They say that often the most naturally gifted do not make the best teachers, and that's certainly the case here. I have no doubt that Curtis Faith's dedication, self-belief, and competitive nature helped him succeed as a trader, and his record in the Turtle experiment speaks for itself. However, I got very little out of this book. For whatever reason, Faith seemed unable or unwilling to clearly articulate his philosophy and methodology, and a result the book didn't really resonate with me.

Perhaps the problem is that the book is a bit unfocussed. `Way of the Turtle' is part biography, part introduction to the Turtle experiment, part outline of Faith's trading philosophy, and part technical reference. It's neither one thing nor the other, and the book often jumps back and forth between these various threads. Despite the promise of untold secrets and strategies, there's really not that much here that you can't find in better, more coherent books. If you want a proper technical reference, there's `Secrets For Profiting In Bull and Bear Markets' by Stan Weinstein, or if you're Australian the works of Louise Bedford. If you want to take a very statistical and theoretical approach to your trading, you can get `Trade Your Way To Financial Freedom' by Van Tharp. These are all more focussed and much better suited for beginners than this book.

Although seemingly designed for new traders, I feel that beginners may not be the right target for this book. Given Faith began his experiment with a sizeable slice of a billionaire's money, his trading principles are perhaps more suited to those who have a large start-up capital, or more experienced traders who have already made their first million. And the rather academic, mathematical approach proposed by Faith is likely to be daunting for novices who are still trying to find their feet in the market.

I am currently at the Beginner/Intermediate level as a trader, and perhaps Faith's book will resonate more strongly as I become more experienced in the market. If so, the rating will be updated to reflect this. As it stands, though, I wouldn't recommend this book for those just starting out. Seek out (in order) Darvas, Bedford, Weinstein, and Tharp.

1 out of 5 stars A total waste   February 14, 2010

To begin with, I consider the purchase of this book as a poor investment. Trading Secrets", Ha. What a misnomer that was. This is nothing but a mishmash of investment ideas none of which are really new or unique. Plus, it's a boring read to boot. Overall, I think whole book was more of an ego trip for the author. Forget it. It's a loser.
One other point regarding these reviews. When you see a series of contradictory comments to every one star review you can bet the publisher/author has had their hand in promoting the book.
