Sennheiser G2 wireless and comparison (and FCC frequency transition) June 4, 2010 Louise du Folet (Washington, DC) I'm a professional sound recordist in the business and just started to use these wirelesses (other camera/sound colleagues express similar sentiments here:). As compared to the more professional systems such as Lectrosonics, I'm quite please about how well they work. Their range is VERY good and not as much RF interference as I thought would occur with such a cheaper wireless. The lav provided, the same, it works better than thought (not as much clothing rustle, etc., as expected). I do wish it had a different connection, specifically a 5-pin connection so that other lavs such as my professional Sankens, can be used instead of the provided lav (my lavs still sound better than the provided lav, though the provided lav is still okay for some professional gigs!). When comparison was made between Lectrosonics and the G2, there was definitely a difference in the background noise: the G2 is definitely much more hissier (i.e, the Lectrosonics still was better because the background noise was less and, therefore, quieter). But, on its own, the G2's hissier background noise is not that noticeable and for the average viewing person, and depending on the gig, the G2 is still quite useable (i.e, the hissy background noise is not noticeable in a shot scene). With the FCC new rules regarding frequencies that were previously used by the tv/broadcast sound industry, which are being taken away from the production world, these G2 wirelesses are a good way to go, in order to get a good wireless sound recording at a reasonable cost without breaking your bank/budget, during this frequency transition. I.e., the RF frequency/wireless world is a bit topsy-turvy in terms of switching to "legal" wirelesses and could be quite expensive to do. You still want to get a good sound recording out in the field with a good wireless, but what should you get to replace your good ol' Lectrosonics that you've used for years?? With this FCC legal requirement (for those with a wirelesses in a certain frequency to vacate the spectrum), at the moment there's a decrease of available products that will work in the professional production tv/broadcast world. But, thankfully, this G2 (and its companion G3) exists! So, to sum up, during this RF/frequency transitional phase, I definitely recommend this wireless brand in order to continue to get good professional wireless recordings, and to save money as you replace your professional wireless system that's no longer legal. Furthermore, for the newbie who's starting in the business, and for a low-end production person who continues to grow into the business over time, this G2 is great for you to use regarding the technical aspects and your budget, and the G2 is good for you to get that good sound quality that's important in production and tends to be overlooked (video is emphasized when first starting out and sound is not budgeted, equipment not bought and an actual sound person is not hired, unfortunately). This inexpensive G2 wireless will help all newcomers become much better with their productions and push you up in the ranks of the production echelons as compared to other initial productions that don't have good sound (after all, 75% is audio and 25% is video...)--i.e, for your first good wireless sound system, go with this G2! Thank you for your time.
Professional package at Prosumer price July 28, 2009 lf4tune (Chatsworth, CA USA) I am a professional and we've used these now for about 5 years (maybe more) -- it is an incredible value for the money. I've put these up against Wireless systems that cost +/- 4000 USD and the Sennheiser knocks the windsocks off the "professional" brands as far as I'm concerned. We have (more than once) concealed one of these on a race car driver, under his racesuit and picked up perfect audio as long as he was in range ... which I think is better than some of the competitors as well!
Sennheiser ew100 Engg2 wireless lavaliere rocks big time May 20, 2009 Lynn (New Orleans, the Crescent City USA) I don't know why I waited so late to purchase this mike system. It is surely a must needed mike system for videographers. It makes a statement when you are shooting and wire someone with a Sennheiser as apposed to a wired unit or lessor brand. This product is designed in Germany and assembled in the USA not China. There are tutorials you can watch in youtube. Yes this is a pricy investment, but it is worth it. Many units sell for over $1,000 so this is the best one for the money from my research.
Great range, excellent features! October 19, 2008 Christopher W. Chua 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I did my research on Amazon and other sites such as B&H Photo Video, and the Sennheiser G2 was consistently touted as the best model for videographers. The videographer for my sister's wedding used the same model (though he sloppily mic'd my brother in law, which I fixed).
I bought this unit for a wedding at Chaminade in Santa Cruz, Ca. I used the autoscan on the receiver to find open channels, set the transmitter pac to that frequency, and then mic'd the groom. I did not experience any interference, I was even able to hear the groom when he was indoors and I was in the courtyard (several walls, probably 100-200 feet).
There are some concerns in other reviews about the quality of the included lavalier. I found the lavalier to be adequate, it even stood up to a slight wind (though i will probably buy a wind screen for the future).
I would highly recommend this unit to anyone needing solid performance form a wireless mic unit. It definitely not a casual investment, but it is a great unit.
**Uses and settings for the wedding**
Placement: Mic'd groom on his coat (his right side), half loop of wire through the alligator clip to prevent some rubbing. Twisty tied excess slack and tucked into groom's inside pocket, clipped transmitter unit to groom's belt on the back side.
Settings: -10 on the transmitter, -24 on the receiver. (PD170 settings) Set Mic 2 input to Mic, manual gain (half of bar or less), no 48v phantom.
The PD170 has two mic inputs, with the option of having Mic 1 going to both channels or only the first channel. Prior to the ceremony, I had the external shotgun mic going to both channels. When the ceremony started, I had the shotgun go to channel 1 and the wireless go to channel 2.
Great Equipment at a Good Price September 30, 2008 S. Frisbie (California) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I did my research and Amazon.com has the best price on this piece of equipment. Combined with Amazon's excellent customer service and solid return policy, why go elsewhere? I'm very satisfied with my purchase.
