4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, almost overbroad protection for your PC   November 6, 2008
Chris Wren (Chicago, Illinois)
McAfee's Total Protection 2008 boasts a lot of protection its protection package. Loaded with all sorts of features and a redesigned Security Center, the breadth of protection seems relatively effortless! Thankfully, it does so without bogging down your system. Yet it doesn't do it without some cost, however minimal it may be.

The Good: This is a great Antivirus program. It will scan your system to almost any depth and your e-mail to almost any degree. The default scan is wide in its breadth as well. In terms of *prevention*, it is even better at keeping things off of your system. [...] Anti-spyware notification is also significantly improved from the previous McAfee suites. Your normal activity on your computer will not be interrupted CONSTANTLY, like some of the security programs do. SiteAdvisor is actually a really great and will look through all your mail / IMs and will check bad links against the blacklist. Anti-spam is exceedingly effective, even though it will sometimes take your newsletters and throw them in the spam folder.

The bad: No wireless network security! Things that can get transferred on a large network (read: Universities) can get through with relative ease. When something is notified in the System Guard, it doesn't say anything detailed at all! While some people won't care about that, I, for one, definitely want to know. The firewall's default is too loose, which allows dangerous sites to be accepted without any notice. Customer service is pitiful. Parental controls don't necessarily "work."

While boasting tons of features, the minor flaws keep this from being a top flight program. However, for most casual users in a simple network looking for some degree of security, the vast amount of internal programs can keep your system relatively clean with little clutter and invasiveness. I do use this program and find it efficient for my needs, and on that, I recommend it. The benefits outweigh the concerns, and the breadth of protection is unparalleled.

1 out of 5 stars Legal(?) Credit Card Thieves   October 22, 2008
Honest Ed (Southeast USA)
Be aware that McAfee has what it states is "McAfee Always On Protection" program. Basically what this does is set you up unknowningly for an auto-renewal when your current virus definition subscription expires. I just received a "receipt" from McAfee. It stated that they used "payment information on file" for a $76.29 charge to my credit card which was NOT AUTHORIZED BY ME!!!! This means that they keep their customer's credit card information "on file". I would stay far, far away from *anything* that says McAfee on it. I've already called VISA but they can only stop future charges!!!....I have to deal with McAfee first!!!

Again....run as fast as you can away from McAfee products!!!!!!!!!

You've been warned!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good solid protection   September 23, 2008

I have been using anti virus and other security related software for over 10 years now, McAfee is not just a brand name, it is a name you can trust. This package is comprehensive and has nice flexibility depending on what latform you use it on. I ran it on WinXP with a simple straightforward install and have been loving it ever since. I would recommend this product to anyone with computer security on their mind. It's good, solid protection for your PC.

1 out of 5 stars Okay starter   September 19, 2008
A. Hogan (Brooklyn, NY USA)
This is an older version of this protection, and is certainly not made to deal with complex viruses nor scans nor trojan horses nor...if you get this , then update to the next generation , and then the pay subscription, you'll be ok. as is, this is pretty much useless in 2008

2 out of 5 stars McAfee Let me down   September 11, 2008
C. Kilic (texas, USA)
I started using McAfee three weeks ago. I have been using Kaspersky before that. I bought McAfee because its reviews and its reputation. I have seen McAfee almost ever web sites as a guardian. Last week, my computer got infected by a Malware and McAfee neither protected my laptop nor cleaned it. On the other hand, my desktop does not have any problems except for the infection from the system. Since I had a system protection for both of my computers, one infection in the laptop affected the other. Although I did not have time to test McAfee in long run, it did fail in the first try.
